Students walking through Wrexham

If you’ve just arrived in Wrexham and are adjusting to uni life, first of all, welcome! We hope you have a fab time here! Secondly, getting used to a new area can take some time, but we’ve put together a list of things that we think are ‘must-dos’ for any students to get the most out of your time here in Wrexham during freshers week and beyond!

Take a look and let us know which ones you’ve done on social media using #myWGU.

Watch Wrexham AFC at the racecourse

Watching Wrexham at home is a must while you’re here at uni. Soak up the atmosphere at one of the oldest international football grounds in the UK and you never know, you might become a Wrexham fan for life! C’mon the Town!

Scope out the SU clubs and societies at the Fresher’s Fair

The Freshers Fair is your opportunity to check out all of the University’s clubs, societies and opportunities all in one place – plus there’s always some freebies to be had!

Have a night out at Wrexham’s pubs, bars & clubs

Wrexham is home to plenty of places to enjoy a night out – whether you’re after some chilled drinks with friends or a big night out partying.

Walk across the Pontcysytlle aqueduct

If you’ve got a head for heights, take a trip 15 minutes outside of the town centre to the Pontcysyllte aqueduct. The aqueduct itself is 126ft tall and is a World Heritage Site.

Take a look around our galleries and museum

Wrexham also has a number of great art and culture spots – including Wrexham Museums, Un Deg Un and Ty Pawb all right in the town centre.

Chill out in the SU and have some pizza

Our Students’ Union is a great place to chill out after a lecture or drop by for one of the SU’s events throughout freshers week.

Check out some new music at Focus Wales

Each spring, hundreds of bands arrive in Wrexham for the Focus Wales international showcase festival. You can even catch a number of gigs on campus!

Explore the great outdoors

Wrexham has two brilliant National Trust sites – Erddig and Chirk Castle –  for you to have a look around, but there are also lots of other great areas to go for long walks and see how beautiful our county is!

Enjoy a pint of Wrexham Lager

As one of the oldest lagers in the UK, from its beginnings in 1882 to its revival in 2010, Wrexham Lager is full of history - so it’s definitely worth sampling our very own tipple while you make Wrexham your home for the next few years!

Belly-laugh at the William Aston Hall

Our Plas Coch campus is also home to the William Aston Hall, where you’ll be able to catch comedians, musicians and stage shows. There’s always loads on, so take a look!

Enjoy your time here

Most importantly, enjoy yourself! University is such a great time in your life, studying the topics you’re passionate about, making amazing new friends and experiencing lots of new things – so make the most of it – 3 years go by so quickly!
