Is it Worth Going to Uni?

Is it worth going to University? A huge question and there is no right or wrong answer.

I was one of the lucky ones because I always knew what I wanted to do for a career. When I chose my options in year nine, media studies was a clear target for me and the same applied in college. So, deciding to come to university was a very easy decision for me.

My course is everything I hoped it would be and more. I’m days away from completing my degree in Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Communications. I can honestly say that without university, I wouldn't be equipped with the confidence, skills and knowledge that I have now.

I’ve gained a wide variety of experience during my time at Glyndŵr, including planning and pitching TV and audio ideas to CBBC, All4 and BBC Radio Wales, taking part in a BBC One Wales TV show and becoming president of Egwyl magazine in my final year. This is all experience that I wouldn't get if it wasn't for coming to uni, but it’s not all about the academic side and experience.

When I look back at who I was before starting my degree, it’s like looking at a completely different person. You grow so much as a person and you don’t even see it happening. I had little to no confidence three years ago and knowing what I know now, I would’ve been laughed out of an industry job interview.

Of course, the work is vital, but growth and friendships have been just as important.

Another fundamental part of the journey is the lecturers. I can’t speak for every student, but mine have been incredible! They always ensure they have the time for each and every one of us which, is something you don’t always get in the industry.

It’s hard to find a balance at first with studying, working, home life, getting experience and having a social life, but like everything, it comes with time and Glyndŵr’s student support team are brilliant.

The thought of student debt puts a lot of people off starting their university journey, but there are options available to help you with that, so make sure you do your research before making a decision you may regret in the future.

Is uni hard? YES

Have I stressed about work? YES

Have I messed up at some point? YES

BUT,

Have I laughed? YES

Have I had the best three years? YES

Have I made friends for life? YES

I’ve always been told that having a degree is great and if you can get the experience to back that up, you’re winning at life!

So, do I think it’s worth going to university? Yes, 100%! The final outcome, experiences and friendships are worth everything.
