Our Television Production and Technology degree is developed in close collaboration with the BBC, Skillset and leading industry experts, and is built around the practical use of the university’s Centre for the Creative Industries and its wide range of facilities, so you can learn and work in a real production environment.

- The Centre for the Creative Industries supports work across a range of creative disciplines using the latest in television production technology.
- Glyndwr’s Television Studio, which features 4K and High Definition cameras and equipment and multi-camera control room.
- Students lead Glyndwr.tv live sessions, streamed live and featuring a mixture of high profile as well as local bands and performers.
- Our graduates have collaborated with a range of local companies including NHS Wales, Wales Rugby League, Clwyd Theatre Cymru and numerous local organisations and productions.
- Past graduates have gone on to work with media companies such as the BBC, Universal Music, QVC and Technicolor and other students have taken on freelance roles and formed their own production companies.
- Previous Creative Industries events at the University have included Ffresh Student Moving Image Festival of Wales and an annual Creative Futures networking event.
- The IT facilities form a core part of course delivery, introducing a range of Non Linear Editing software such as Final Cut, Premiere and AVID as well as colour correction, compositing and 3D packages. These IT facilities are also open access and are available to students in order to develop their skills.
What you will study
Each year of the programme is designed to introduce new concepts, skills and theories and progression to the next level will leverage and develop core skills in a cumulative way.
YEAR 1 (LEVEL 4)
- Introduction to Audio Skills: This is your introduction to sound production, manipulation and editing for media practitioners; musicians; prospective sound and media engineers and installation artists. The course focuses on the implementation of sound systems in small to medium scale installations, and the techniques involved in studio-based audio production. It introduces you to the key elements that are required to provide high quality sound and furnishes you with the required skills to set up and use digital and analogue sound equipment effectively.
- Introduction to Screen Skills: We introduce you to screen technique– Camera. Lighting, Narrative and Editing . It will enable you to understand the principles of lighting for screen media. You will learn to engage as a team member in the screen media production environment. The module will introduce you to the techniques to provide critical and analytical understanding of style and genre and enable you to work creatively across production disciplines and provide an introduction to equipment and technologies for media production. You will learn to work in a safe manner and appreciate the health and safety constraints of different working production environments.
- Study Skills: The module aims to ensure that you receive appropriate grounding in core academic and IT skills, personal and professional skills to include relevant IT required for successful study at higher education level and progression through the degree, and applying them to the modules within the programme.
- Creative Futures 1 (Employability Portfolio): This will provide you the opportunities for the development of transferable skills which are appropriate and beneficial for your academic, personal and vocational progress. You will gain an introduction into the professional life of media professionals, working artists and designers and to create an awareness of career opportunities. You will examine contemporary practitioners and their working philosophies and assess their influence in the specialist field through industrial visits, exhibitions and design festivals, guest talks and media professional lectures. We will look at the importance of communication, working relationships and the demands and expectations of the workplace. You will build a personal development planning.
- Stock Media Asset Design: To introduce you to creative practice through your own specialist environment. Explore the significance of creative environments as it pertains to a portfolio career in the media and communications industries. You’ll define and implement parameters for learning and development in creative environments that take in career goals within the media production industries. The module enables collaboration and communication when working on creative projects and teaches you to express ideas and information when carrying out set tasks, taking into account varying ways people interact with information.
- Media Production: We introduce you to a range of techniques allowing the creation of a multi-platform creative profile. The module has been designed to give you the opportunity to critically analyse emerging online trends used by creative freelance professionals to create a branded online presence of their own.
YEAR 2 (LEVEL 5)
- Studio Production Standards: The aim of this module is to expand upon principles acquired in the first year of the programme and apply the skills to design scenarios representing industry related tasks. The knowledge delivered will be concerned with the visual, acoustic and electrical design of a real space with ideas and principles drawn from case studies. You will be introduced to 2D and 3D design packages to enable the creation of designs to a creative and professional standard. The electrical considerations will be an expansion of the knowledge acquired in Level 4 audio and video modules, applying core electrical principles to standard interconnections and wiring protocols for digital and analogue signal paths.
- Visual Effects: To explore image manipulation techniques using Visual effects applications – this will include Keying, blend operations, tracking and colour correction. You will also develop further understanding of image channels and their functions. This module will help you to understand the values of different image data types and adhere to colour pipeline methodologies to convincingly blend images together.
- Audio for Screen Media: The content of this module is to establish audio recording principles as applied to Screen Media, Television & Film Production. The theory concentrates on both analogue and digital process of current practice and will establish key skills required for application of technology within the TV studio and location-based recording. The aim of the module is to establish the factors that define quality in recording practice with regard to gain structure, microphone technique and other production values. This module will deliver technical competence within the process of recording, editing and mixing. It will specifically focus on the recording methods required for various screen formats and also for television production.
- Broadcast Standards: The module will investigate the technical and ethical standards of broadcast. Technical standards will look at standards for Radio, TV, Web, Mobile and emerging forms of delivery. The process of broadcast and the technicalities involved will be investigated. Ethical considerations of broadcast will be covered by looking at case studies and by reviewing the Ofcom code of conduct.
- Research Methods: The content of this module is designed to introduce you to the concepts and practice of applied research. This will be achieved through the examination of trends in technology and the external cultural/technological factors that have led to its success or failure. This module offers the opportunity to develop a firm base of research skills to support you to progress in subsequent modules and further study. Underpinning this is the understanding of how an extended piece of academic writing is constructed, preparing you for extended academic writing such as the dissertation and project modules at level 6.
- Advanced Studio (TV): This module aims to develop your proficiency in a contemporary television studio environment and build on previous experience in screen media and production and post-production modules. The aim is to combine skills in screen media, multi-camera, lighting and visual effects content to produce genre specific TV show content. This module will offer opportunities for creative and technical development and exploration, to develop skills introduced in the preceding semesters and introduce further single and multiple camera techniques and more advanced post-production skills. It will also contain the communication between the working groups, demonstrating your appreciation of the roles within a production team.
YEAR 3 (LEVEL 6)
- Dissertation: This module will produce a piece of research that will complement your study to date, it will be based on an existing or emergent theme from within the degree structure. The culmination of course-work though the dissertation will be an academic development displaying your knowledge of subjects of study. Required knowledge and skills from all previous modules, together with the key skills – investigation, planning, self-management, evaluation, presentation, and report writing- expected of a creative media technology student. In particular, originality should be demonstrated. You will be capable of producing a dissertation that is supported by factual referenced evidence. If required, suitable statistical analysis will be employed to investigate data. OR;
- Project: The project brings together all of your subjects of study, requiring knowledge, and skills from all previous modules, together with personal common skills- investigation, planning, self-management, evaluation, presentation and report writing – expected of someone working in creative media technology. Your originality should be demonstrated. It will provide you with the opportunity to practise the problem-solving activities of a creative engineer, and to explore original ideas. You will exercise your ability in applying and extending the methods, skills, information, knowledge and understanding obtained during the various parts of the degree in the development and evaluation of a major piece of work.
- Post-Production: This module addresses the technical and artistic values involved with developing a professional audio post-production process. The theory will explore and support the techniques required to produce sound for TV, film and portable media. This module acts as a firm grounding in the principles and techniques concerned, as required by a visual, media, or audio professional. The content of this module addresses the skills required for the synchronisation of audio-visual material, to Foley and sound design. Surround sound standards will also be covered and the approach of mixing in surround.
- Client Collaboration: To develop you in controlling and delivering a live project, this is to be developed by negotiation with a client. The content is a client-led brief from within their professional area. The constraints and expectation of a real-world project will be expected to be delivered. The module is intended to develop your ability to work as part of a team, also to produce and manage a professional brief to the criteria set by an external client. This will provide you with practical opportunities to promote their creative, technical and professional abilities.
- Media Delivery: This module affords you the opportunity to develop high end, professional skills in the editing and composition of contemporary digital video and multimedia. The aim of the module is to examine and utilise traditional and innovative approaches for special effects and post- production of media. The module will use examples from film, television, music and games, replicating these through the utilisation of digital video and audio editing, synthesis and manipulation software packages. In addition to development of an advanced practical set of skills, you will also grow a deepened understanding of digital technologies and the theories that support practical work. This is achieved by looking at the current, state of the art, and future technologies in the fields of digital media, television and broadcasting. It will also extend your range of your digital media editing skills to a professional level and expose you to a range of current and future technologies and allow you opportunities to evaluate these technologies for yourselves. You will ground your practical skills with a deep, solid understanding of digital manipulation theories.
- Emergent Media Techniques: The module is designed to allow you to identify, critically examine and debate a range of current and social issues in media and television, such as the implications of new technologies on those working in the industry and those in the audience, and in so doing develop a critical awareness of the impact of current and emerging technology and production techniques. It will enable you to gain a broad general knowledge of some current research and developing areas and their application in industry. You will consider the moral and ethical impact of these developments and be able to confidently explain and assess the value of these technologies.

The academic requirements for the course are 80-112 UCAS tariff points at GCE A-level or equivalent.
Teaching & Assessment
There is a range of assessment methods used for this course including creating music productions, essays, work based learning, portfolios, reports, and presentations.
In addition to lectures and workshops, students on this course are encouraged to explore this vital facility for their own projects to enhance and support learning and development.
All assessments are project based.

- Photography - Image capture, both still and video is at the heart of the curriculum and students have gone on to produce a range of photographic work.

Wrexham Glyndŵr University’s tuition fees for 2022/23 for a full-time undergraduate degree course are £9000 per year.
