What you will study

Students studying our Law and Business course will have the opportunity to study the following modules.

YEAR 1 (LEVEL 4)

MODULES

• Public Law: Constitutional and Administrative Law (Core): This module provides students with an understanding of the key institutions, principles and theories underpinning constitutional arrangements in the United Kingdom and the devolved nations and how human rights are protected.
• Introduction to Management and Business (Core): Explore the fundamentals of business, including organisational structure and the nature of the modern business practices. There are opportunities for students to acquire a broad understanding of management by exploring the skills and characteristics of effective managers and leaders, and techniques to successfully manage a team.
• Contract Law (Core): Develop an understanding of substantive rules and principles of contract law in relation to legally binding obligations and how the law of contract may be applied.
• European Law and Global Problems (Core): The aim of the module is to introduce students to the foundations of European and international ‘legal’ relations and how tensions between states are managed in international law.
• Marketing Essentials (Core): Recognise the importance of marketing’s role in driving success and delivering results. Students will learn about the different functions of marketing in the 21st century and will study how an appreciation of consumer behaviour and the marketing environment can enable effective targeting and planning.
• Study Skills in Higher Education (Core): This module provides students with an underpinning knowledge of the academic requirements when studying in higher education. It aims to encourage students to become more efficient learners and supports students for learning and on-going personal and professional development.

YEAR 2 (LEVEL 5)

MODULES

• Legal Skills, Ethics and Professional Standards (Core): Develop legal skills and abilities to understand and navigate the contextual, moral, ethical and professional backdrop of legal practice in England and Wales.
• Criminal Law (Core): Understand the principles and analyse the substantive rules of criminal liability and how rules of evidence apply in areas of criminal law. Students will also consider the specifics of a range of offences in criminal law, defences and mitigations.
• Digital Business Strategy (Core): This module aims to equip students with the skills needed to build digital competitive advantage in a rapidly changing world. Explore why it is essential for companies to re-examine four fundamental aspects of their business to thrive in the digital era—their strategy, value chain, customer engagement, and organization structure.
• Tort (Core): The module aims to familiarise students with general principles of tort liability as reflected in the law governing negligence, battery/ intentional interference with the person and the law of nuisance.
• Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Core): Discover how ideas are developed, how entrepreneurship operates and an understanding of Innovation and entrepreneurship theories within a business context. This module will enable students to enhance their employment prospects in the workplace by providing them with an understanding of the sought-after traits of entrepreneurship and innovation and how to express them.
• International Business and Trade (Core): Develop a critical and practical understanding of the concepts and principles of international business and trade and the ability to apply these concepts to the contemporary international business world. The module explains the main concepts, principles and functions of international business and globalisation and applies the challenges of international business culture to realistic commercial situations. This includes a practical understanding of the global financial system and an evaluation of theories of international trade in terms of its commercial consequences. International business strategy will also be assessed and applied in terms of its commercial consequences.

YEAR 3 (LEVEL 6)

MODULES

• Property and Land Law (Core): Develop a critical understanding of the key concepts of English and Welsh land law related to: the ownership of family property, the regulation of leases and the law of mortgages; and the distinctions between legal and equitable rights, personal and proprietary interests and registered and unregistered land.
• Strategic Management (Core): This module presents a systematic approach to the study of strategic management, building upon an array of ideas and theories ranging from industrial organization theory to institutional economics. This unit outlines the fundamentals of strategic management and gives students an introduction in this important area of business management. Students will gain an awareness of the issues involved and the techniques that managers adopt. The tools and techniques will help students understand how organisations achieve sustainable competitive advantage.
• Equity and Trusts (Core): Examine the nature and development of equity and trusts - the key principles and doctrines that apply to those areas and the application of these concepts in contemporary life and in relation to forms of trusts e.g. charitable, constructive trusts.
• Law Dissertation (Core): The module is designed to support students in developing and completing a dissertation based on a topic drawn from their study of the individual LLB modules. Students are given the opportunity to develop independent research and argumentation skills, and to acquire knowledge on a discrete set of legal issues chosen by themselves.
• Managing People in an International Context (Option): This module provides comprehensive knowledge and understanding of managing people in an international context. The impact of national and cultural contexts, international human resource management approaches (IHRM) and the future of IHRM will be covered as part of this module.
• Strategic Marketing (Option): Build on the marketing foundations studied previously and provides a staged approach to the nature of strategic marketing which contribute to the achievement of a competitive advantage. It will introduce the broader aspects of strategic marketing that reflect contemporary developments in advocacy and ethics.

The information listed in this section is an overview of the academic content of the programme that will take the form of either core or option modules. Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal academic framework review, so may be subject to change.

Entry requirements & applying

The academic requirements for the course are 80-112 UCAS tariff points at GCE A-level or equivalent, from a minimum of two A levels and GCSE Mathematics and English/Welsh (First Language) at Grade C/4 or equivalent. Appropriate AS-Level and Level 3 Key Skills qualifications will also be taken into account.

Teaching & Assessment

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Students studying the BA (Hons) Law and Business degree will have access to multiple learning opportunities on every module, including face to face or online classes (with core and guest lecturers), seminars, access to recorded lectures, lecture notes and handouts, and directions to relevant essential and additional reading.

Class sizes encourage an interactive approach to learning and staff will typically engage students with key issue by drawing on case studies and their practice experiences in the legal or business field. Lectures will be organised around lecture inputs, quizzes, recorded video content, larger and small group discussions, and debates. When modules are primarily delivered online, recorded content will be available that replicates synchronous learning experiences and students will be involved in a range of online activities and discussions. Face to Face or video mediated appointments can be made with tutoring staff to discuss module content and assignments.
