What you will study

A Professional Studies module unites university work with time spent in school developing links between theory and practice. The module focuses on the ways children develop and learn effectively. It considers the roles and responsibilities of a teacher, key learning theories and some of the major educational thinkers. You explore the cycle of planning, teaching and evaluating and the importance of creating a stimulating and safe learning environment for the children in their care. Other modules include: English, mathematics, science, physical education, modern foreign languages, Welsh as a second language and broader curriculum modules including art, computing, design and technology, drama, geography, history, music and Religious Education.

A cross curricular module introduces you to the value of using a cross curricular approach to provide meaningful contexts for learning. Keynote lectures from experts in their fields, including classroom practitioners inform and stimulate you to work in small teams to develop a cross-curricular plan based on a current theme. You present your work at an exhibition that encourages debate and shared learning. Other modules include: English, mathematics, science, physical education, modern foreign languages, Welsh as a second language and broader curriculum modules connecting and combining subjects.

A Research Project module establishes the importance of undertaking research, the purpose of research methodology and the benefits of writing a literature review. It gives an insight into the philosophy of education. You conduct a small-scale research through your chosen theme and in so doing you are able to bring together theory and practice in a way that enhances your understanding of teaching and learning. The module establishes the importance of teachers taking responsibility for deepening their understanding of teaching and learning thus improving what they do. The module provides a taster of and springboard for Master's level work. Other modules include: English, mathematics, science, physical education and Professional Studies.
