The North Wales Business School at Wrexham Glyndwr University has received national recognition after being highly commended for its “innovation and radical thinking” in business education delivery.

Staff from the North Wales Business School attended a prestigious AMBA & BGA Excellence Awards 2022/23 ceremony in London, where they came runners-up in the Best Innovation Strategy category.

The team were recognised for the creation of the North Wales Business School Simulation Suite, which gives students the opportunity to build and lead their own business, using a variety of simulation packages. For example, Edmundo Business Simulation Software enables students to lead a fictitious company as Chief Executive, Chief Operating Officer or Chief Finance Officer. Students work in teams in a dynamic world to respond to changes within the business simulation.

Dr Alexis Mason, Principle Lecturer in Business at Wrexham Glyndwr University, said: “We were absolutely thrilled to have been highly commended in the Best Innovation Strategy category at the AMBA & BGA Excellence Awards. It is true testament to the quality of teaching and the fantastic resources available for our students.”

Robert Leigh, Programme Lead and Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at Wrexham Glyndwr University, said: “The suite that we have built at the North Wales Business School encompasses the award-winning Edmundo Business Simulation software, which allows our students to run their own business, as well as undertake coding demonstrations and practice using software such as Python, Excel and SPSS for analysing data. The suite also gives students the resources they need to prepare for interviews, develop both their leadership and interpersonal skills.”

“Since the investment and development of the suite, we’ve recorded some fantastic student satisfaction scores. Based on our internal student surveys, more than 95% of students reported that the business simulation software enhances their learning and also fed back that they were able to put the theory they learned in the lecture into practice.”

Dr Simon Stewart, Dean of the Faculty for Social and Life Sciences and the North Wales Business School at Wrexham Glyndwr University, said: “This is a really proud achievement for us all and demonstrates our high standards of teaching at Wrexham Glyndwr University.

“It’s pleasing that we are able to equip our students with the skills and experience that they need in order to prepare them for employment beyond their studies.”
