Social inclusion stakeholders invited to attend launch of new North Wales research institute

Professionals working within the field of social inclusion in Wales can hear about some of the world-leading work being undertaken by a new research institute at its official launch event next week.

Stakeholders are being invited to attend the launch of Cyfiawnder -The Social Inclusion Research Institute at Wrexham Glyndwr University, which is being established to become a resource for service providers to identify, promote and research good practice in relation to social inclusion.

The event is taking place on Thursday 19 January 2023 between 9am to 2pm at Wrexham Glyndwr University.

Established during the beginning of 2022, the institute is a research community in the Faculty of Social and Life Sciences at Wrexham Glyndwr University that aims to foster collaboration between academics, service providers, and service users to undertake high quality research, respond to funding opportunities, and develop grant applications to promote social inclusion.

On the day there will be an opportunity to learn more about how Cyfiawnder can support you, as well as meet the directors, members, associates and PhD students associated with the institute to hear about their work.

Some of the research undertaken by the Cyfiawnder that will be highlighted at the launch event includes:

  • Homelessness – An overview of the research members have been, and are currently, involved with related to ending homelessness in Wales.
  • Developing green infrastructure – The Health and Wellbeing team will present findings from a recently completed evaluation of a three-year green infra structure project, which aimed to improve green spaces in two of the most deprived areas of North Wales.
  • Minimum Unit Pricing in Wales – An outline of the research members have been, and are currently, undertaking in relation to the Introduction of Minimum Unit Pricing in Wales.
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Research – The team will provide an update regarding the research they have been working on relating to ACE and the university becoming ‘trauma informed’.

Professor Iolo Madoc-Jones, Co-Director of Cyfiawnder, said: “Staff at Wrexham Glyndwr University have been involved in high quality research over a number of years.

“Cyfiawnder -The Social Inclusion Research Institute will build on this work to become a resource for University staff to launch or extend their research credentials and for stakeholders in the criminal justice, social care and social policy sectors to work in collaboration to help enhance good practice and research opportunities to bolster social inclusion.

“I would encourage those with a stake in social inclusion in Wales to come along to this exciting launch event to find out more about our work – some of which was recently described as world-leading in an independent review of research outputs across the UK.”

The launch will be attended by a wide range of service providers in the criminal justice, housing, health and social care sectors and include an informal networking lunch between 1-2pm for all delegates.
