Student Nurses at Wrexham Glyndwr University get behind Christmas Shoebox Appeal

A new cohort of student nurses, along with the staff based at the St Asaph campus of Wrexham Glyndwr University have collected shoeboxes and toy donations to support a North Wales based charity that supports people who have been subjected to domestic abuse.

The student nurses recently received a lecture as part of their Nursing course from the team at the Domestic Abuse Safety Unit (DASU).

The student nurses, who are based at the OpTIC Centre in St Asaph, were touched by work undertaken by the charity and made a pledge to do what they could in the run up to Christmas to support the charity.

They have collected donations and made shoeboxes containing essentials and treats to be given to users of the service, along with collecting toy donations to be given to children supported by the charity.

Alison Lester-Owen Principal Lecturer and Professional Lead in Nursing at Wrexham Glyndwr University, said: “We are delighted to help facilitate this student-led activity that supports the crucial work of this fantastic charity. We as a team are proud of the work and efforts that our students have made to make this happen.”

DASU are a charity based in North Wales supporting men, women and children who have been subjected to domestic abuse.

DASU offer free and confidential services, providing practical and emotional support, recovery programmes and refuge accommodation.

A spokesperson for DASU said: “We are so grateful for the generosity of Wrexham Glyndwr University students, and the gifts provided will be distributed to clients in our refuges and in the community.”
