Wrexham, along with the rest of Wales, is extremely passionate about its sport, which is one of the defining features of this part of the world. Not only is this reflected in the sport and leisure offered at Wrexham University, but the region itself is home to professional and semi-professional sports clubs which offer up some great entertainment for sports fans.
There will be ample opportunities to take part and perhaps try something completely different, whilst making some great friends in the process.
So whether you're an active participant or you're just happy to support from the comfort of your seat, Wrexham and the local area has something for everyone.
Sport you can watch
Football
Wrexham Football Club is the lifeblood of the town. Every home game, played at the Wrexham University Racecourse Stadium, is met with eager anticipation. The club currently plays in the Blue Square Bet Premier, one tier below the English Football League, and attracts average attendances of 3,000-4,000.
The stadium hosted international football for the first time in 1887, making it the world's oldest international football stadium still in use today. You can pay at the turnstiles for most of the club's home games, with single matches priced at £18 or less for adults.
Several smaller clubs in the region play in the Welsh Premier League, while local league football is plentiful at weekends.
Rugby League
North Wales Crusaders play in Betfred League 1, a third-tier competition in the division below the Championship. They are the only professional rugby league club in North Wales, although the sport is growing in popularity. The Crusaders are based at the Queensway Stadium in Wrexham.
Horse Racing
Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse, situated within Wrexham County Borough just 6 miles from the town, held its first jump meeting in 1859. Now, it holds at least one meeting a month for 11 months of the year. The course offers a different racing experience to the glitz and glamour at Chester Racecourse. Chester's Roodee course is the oldest racecourse in Britain and holds frequent race meetings during the summer. The average crowd at Chester Races is over 22,000, with its flagship May meeting which kicks off the season usually selling out. The journey from Wrexham to Chester takes around 20 minutes by car or train.
Ice Hockey
Deeside Dragons are the only ice hockey team based in North Wales. The club plays its home games on Sunday evenings at Deeside Ice Rink, a 30 minute drive from Wrexham in the town of Queensferry. The club compete in the National Ice Hockey League North Two.
Motor Racing
Each Autumn, the region plays host to Wales Rally GB, an important event in the World Rally Championship. There are various routes which encircle the Wrexham area, and you can visit the main hub of the action which takes place at Deeside Service Park, just a short distance away from Wrexham University.
Sport you can play
North Wales is home to numerous top-class sports facilities, providing an excellent location for anyone to continue playing their own sport while they study...or maybe even try something new.
The Wrexham University Sport Centre is both a student and community facility, featuring a gym, sports hall and several outdoor sports pitches, including an international standard hockey pitch.
Athletics
The track and field facilities at Queensway Leisure and Activity Centre are used for championship events and were even used by the Lesotho Olympic team for their training ahead of the London 2012 Olympics. Wrexham Athletics Club trains at the centre every Tuesday. The facility also has a gym, sports hall, squash court and outdoor five-a-side football pitches.
Hockey
The North Wales Regional Hockey Stadium is a water-based international FIH accredited facility located on the University's Wrexham campus. It's floodlit and holds 200 spectators. The pitch has hosted several international hockey matches involving Wales and was the venue for the men's EuroHockey Nations Trophy in 2009. Wrexham Hockey Club (Junior, Men & Ladies) and Northop Hall Hockey Club (Men) play at the stadium.
Swimming
Waterworld is Wrexham's main aquatics centre. It has a 25m, six-lane competition pool, plus a slide and bubble pool. It's also home to a health suite and fitness centre. The centre is used by Wrexham Swimming Club.
Golf
Situated in a rural part of the country, the Wrexham area isn't short of golf clubs. Wrexham Golf Club and Clays Golf Centre and are both located within a few miles of Wrexham town centre.
Tennis
Wrexham Tennis Centre sits next to Wrexham University's main campus. The facility was established in 1990 to provide a centre of excellence and develop up-and-coming tennis talent in North Wales. It has seven indoor and seven outdoor full-size tennis courts and is a Lawn Tennis Association High Performance Centre.
