Catherine is a 2nd year BA Criminology and Criminal Justice student at Wrexham Glyndŵr University.

What were you doing before coming to Wrexham Glyndŵr University?

I was a full-time mother.

What attracted you to Wrexham Glyndŵr University?

I've had some personal experiences that influenced the decision to educate myself, and give something back in response to the amazing help I had received from professional bodies during that tough time. Also, I have 2 young children who at the time were 2 and 3. I was conscious that time was drawing closer and both children would soon be in full-time education, and I essentially wanted to provide a better future for them.

Did you attend an open day? What did you think?

It was very welcoming and very easy to find my way around to where I needed to go. Staff were very helpful, as were the lecturers that I had spoken to regarding the courses I was interested in.

What’s the atmosphere like around campus?

The atmosphere around campus is comfortable and relaxed.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

Everything, it is a very well run department and interesting course.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I originally wished to go into witness support, however the opportunities are immense. I am also interested in youth justice, rehabilitation, early intervention and cognitive brain therapy. The possibilities are endless.

What has the support been like?

The support has been amazing. As a mature student, I have not been in education for many years, and foremost at an academic level. There is extensive help with assignments to perform at the level required for your degree.

How do you think you have benefited from studying at Wrexham Glyndŵr University?

I have become more confident in my life in every way. I feel that there is nothing you cannot achieve if you are passionate enough. I am now achieving at a level I thought I was not capable of and have become empowered as a result.

If you were to sum up your experience at Wrexham Glyndŵr University in one word, what would it be and why?

Transforming. Not only have I excelled further than I ever imagined, but my future is also now on a whole new, incredibly exciting path. I cannot wait for the next door to open.
