Matthew Wright

Matthew is currently studying BN Hons Registered Nurse (Adult Nursing) at Wrexham Glyndŵr University. 

What were you doing before coming to Wrexham Glyndŵr University?

I was a Theatre Escort in the Robert Jones and Agnus Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen, taking patients from the wards through to the anaesthetic room and into the theatre. Before that, I spent 20 years in the military, both in the regular army and army reserves, and before that I was a factory worker.

What attracted you to Wrexham Glyndŵr University?

The location was a big factor, and also the pass rates and employment rates of graduates were really appealing.

What’s the atmosphere like around campus?  

It is always a hive of activity, with many mature students like myself on campus.

What do you enjoy most about your course? 

For me, the placements are the most enjoyable. However, the lectures are enjoyable too, especially the way the lecturers make the lessons fun and get everyone involved.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

When I graduate, I hope to work in A&E or on a cardiology ward.

What has the support been like? 

I was diagnosed with dyslexia by the University and the support has been brilliant in relation to that. The lecturers, during and after lessons, have always been there to support the cohort as well.

How do you think you have benefited from studying at Wrexham Glyndŵr University?   

Other student nurses I have spoken to have much larger cohorts and don’t seem to get the support that Glyndŵr can give.

If you were to sum up your experience at Wrexham Glyndŵr University in one word, what would it be and why?

Excellent - because of the great support from all the staff I’ve come across, from the receptionists to the library staff, catering staff and tutors.
